My Name is Jonathan TuckerI started the Greeks Do Great Things websiteHello World! My name is Jonathan Tucker and I'm a fraternity member at San Diego State University (SDSU). The entire world is hearing about the recent "drug bust" that occured at SDSU on Tuesday May 8th, 2008. A number of SDSU students were arrested for allegedly being a part of a "drug ring" that has been operating on the campus. A small portion of the people arrested were members of various fraternities on campus at SDSU. Although only a few people involved in the drug bust were fraternity members, the international media has decided that it'd be a logical idea to cast the Greeks (fraternities and sororities) on the SDSU campus in a negative light due to these events. I think that to make such a broad conclusion about the Greek population at SDSU based on the actions of less then 1% of the Greek population is not only sad: it's flawed journalism. Why Did I Create This Website? I created this website as a platform for the entire world to see and hear about the great things that Greeks have done. Through having nearly 10,000 people visit the article I wrote about the "drug bust" (seen here) and the disappointment I have in how Greeks were portrayed the media, I realized that people in this world care about what has occured. Both Greeks and non-Greeks have voiced their opinion in support of the article. I created this website so that the world can hear the truth about Greeks, regardless of whether or not the national media and television networks are going to be a part of this positive movement. To the Greeks, Let's unite in this time of tragedy and help the world understand what we truly stand for. I once heard a quote that inspires me everyday: "it's not the times of greatness that define who you are...it's the times of tragedy and despair that show the mark of your character". - Show the world that during a time of tragedy and despair, we can come together as a international united Greek community to support each other.
- In a time where the entire world is looking at "frats' and Greek life as a source of some of the biggest drug problems on college campuses today, show the world that Greeks are the source of so many positive community projects and efforts.
- In a time of tragedy and despair, show the mark of character that represents Greeks everywhere.
Show The World That Greeks are Positive People Post stories about your particular fraternity or sorority by clicking here . The world will see the great things you've done. To the Media of the US, I have never been more proud to be a part of the Greek community as I have been this week. However, that pride has also been mixed with extreme disappointment in the actions of reporters and media managers around the entire country. Being Greek myself, I fully understand the great and positive influences that us Greeks have on college campuses around the country. However, I've been struggling with how we can show the entire world about these positve things since the media tends to only show Greeks in times of trouble and tragedy. - I did not start this site to spread anger at the media...anger does not solve anything
- I did not start this site to show you that we can make a positive difference without your media help...that has already been proven on my blog here
I started this site to make the world a more positive place! There is so much negativity in the media, both on the topic of Greeks recently and many many other topics. I find it sad to see that the media as a whole is not working together to show the world a positive story about Greeks trying to make a difference. I find it disheartening that you're showing so much negativity to the world through your reports on drugs, death, violence, and related topics. I find it sad that your glass, as the saying goes, is not "half full". However, I also find it encouraging to see that there is so much international support for the message that I'm trying to spread. I find it incredibly exciting to learn how powerful the internet can be in this day and age to spread a message to people all over the world, including the entire USA, China, Europe, Australia, South Africa, and all the other citizens of the world that took the time to read my origional blog posting (click here) . I find it promising that the world is not represented by the tons of negativity that we see on our TV screens and in our magazines every single day of the week. - I find it remarkable that a 21 year old student can spread a positive message to 10,000+ people around the world without the media's help!
To individual members of the media, I challenge you today! - I challenge you to take the road less traveled...
- I challenge you to be the first media members to make a difference and try something new...
- I challenge you to be a part of the positivity, and not part of the problem.
Let's work together and do some good for the world. Email me (click here) so we can work together on promoting positivity in this world. - I've proven that I can do this without the media's help...
- ...but I think the world would be a better place if you would change your thoughts, change your actions, and help me change the world
Thanks to the readers of this site, Thanks to EVERYONE for reading my site, my blog, and expressing their opinions. I know that I can't change the world on my own, but it's really promising to see that I can create a website where thousands and thousands of people can come together and work together to make a difference in the world. Sincerely, Jonathan Tucker A Greek, A Student, and a Positive Person
